GRAFE celebrates 20 successful years

Blankenhain/Thuringia 18.10.2011 - In September 1991, the family-run company was founded at the ZEISS Hauptwerk in Jena by the four Grafe brothers, Matthias, Clemens, Michael and Christian, as well as co-founder Wolfgang Müllenberg. Today, the GRAFE Group, which employs over 250 members of staff, is one of Europe’s leading masterbatch manufacturers.

The emotional celebrations to mark the company’s 20th anniversary on 1st September 2011 began at 12.30pm with the official ceremony. In front of around 300 guests, including Prof. Bernhard Vogel and Mr. Dieter Althaus, the four brothers provided a retrospective look at their company’s unique success story. Afterwards, guests were able to take part in a tour of the company.

Once upon a time.... this is how many of the old fairytales begin. A modern fairytale began at the Zeiss Hauptwerk in Jena 20 years ago. The four brothers, Matthias, Clemens, Christian and Michael Grafe and Wolfgang Müllenberg founded GRAFE Color Batch GmbH with nothing more than courage, expertise and a good dose of entrepreneurship.

Over time, the company outgrew its premises; there was no reliable telephone system and no postbox. Jena was also lacking the necessary infrastructure at that time. As there were no real prospects for the company there, Blankenhain was chosen as the new headquarters in 1995 and eight phases of construction have been completed to date.

Overall, around 40 million EUR was invested in Blankenhain. This investment included the construction of the buildings as well as technical equipment in the departments for production, research, development and investments in liquid assets. During the latest project, 9.5 million EUR was invested in a new production building, a warehouse and new machinery.

The company has been firmly committed to social causes right from the beginning. The GRAFE Group supports local schools in the Weimarer Land region, sports institutions, support centres and the community foundation in Blankenhain. In terms of culture, the company also provides support as a member of the Schlossverein Blankenhain (Blankenhain Castle Association) and as a sponsor of the Weimarer Mal- und Zeichenschule (Weimar Painting and Drawing School). In addition to the company cooperates in the competence networks of the plastics industry and Polymermat e.V.

The company has continuously increased its number of staff and turnover figures over the course of its history. In addition to its headquarters in Blankenhain, there are also distribution companies in Poland and Italy. GRAFE is DIN EN ISO 9001 and ISO/TS16949 certified. The company’s products have been receiving increasing numbers of coveted awards in recent years, e.g. the Weimarer Wirtschaftspreis (Weimar Economics Prize), the Management Award and, two years in a row, the Automotive Division Award.

Apart from color and additive master batches, the product spectrum of GRAFE Advanced Polymers GmbH includes a wide range of functional plastic compounds. One of the industry’s largest R&D departments is focusing its efforts on the latest technologies that can equip plastic with intelligent functions. Founded in 1991, the company is now operating as GRAFE Group with its three divisions: Color Batch, Additive Batch and Polymer Technik. The employees develop new products and produce in the highly modern facility at Blankenhain (Thuringia) in heart of Germany for the national and international market. The Group is certified pursuant to DIN EN ISO TS 16949 and DIN EN ISO 9001/2000. Further information under: www.grafe.com
