Electrically conductive products are required to meet high legal standards for the protection of customers. PAH concentrations in materials must never exceed maximum levels wherever there is the possibility of skin contact, even for short periods. The GRAFE Group offers reduced-PAH conductive compounds in accordance with the standards required by the GS seal for tested quality in the Categories 1 – 2, thus complying with the statutory EU directive which will go into effect from December 2015. This directive sets the maximum PAH concentration at 1mg/kg.


Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are a group of organic compounds classified as toxic to the environment and harmful to human health. These substances result mainly from incomplete combustion of organic matter, which is why PAHs accumulate in industrial carbon black pigments used to modify polymer conductivity. The GS quality seal applies standardized testing procedures in order to evaluate the potential hazard of PAHs in plastics-based electrically conductive consumer products. It sets the maximum PAH level in relation to mass depending on a given product’s application. Humans absorb PAHs in particular through skin contact, food and when breathing affected air. For example, to be listed in Category 2 of the GS label, the total amount of PAH in a substance must be lower than 10 mg/kg and the maximum of levels of benzopyrene, which are particularly critical, must not exceed 1mg/kg.


To address these concerns, the GRAFE Polymer Technik GmbH has developed a new range of products in the area of carbon black modified, electrically conductive polymer carbons. All products in this series comply with PAH levels in accordance with the GS seal for tested quality / Categories 1-2, and with the new EU regulation 1272/2013.
