Work safety made by GRAFE

Blankenhain/Thuringia, October 2013 –GRAFE Polymer Technik GmbH is one of the most innovative partners to the plastics processing industry. The company from Thuringia is presenting its latest material development at the K: a permanently antistatic compound for the manufacture of safety helmets. The primary objective in developing this material was to meet the requirements of DIN EN 397, since protecting the health and safety of people is of highest priority.


Safety on construction sites is of top priority, particularly in hazardous areas. Safety helmets are one of the most important pieces of protective equipment in the construction and related industries. DIN EN 397 states that safety helmets must be worn without exception at work and during all activities where falling, suspended, thrown, or blown objects may present danger. The purpose of safety helmets is to limit, or better still, avoid danger. To this end, helmets must be resistant against thermal, chemical and climatic influences and should withstand both elastic and plastic deformation. In testing, helmets are exposed to very low (down to -10 °C) and very high temperatures (up to 50°C), and are subjected to a ball drop and penetration test. In this test, the helmets are examined for penetration resistance and safety upon impact with pointed or rounded objects.


Up until now, permanently conductive materials have only been produced in standard black. Safety helmets in other colors were not electrically conductive and had therefore no antistatic properties. The newly developed, permanently antistatic PP compound from the GRAFE Group allows the manufacture of colored, electrically conductive helmets. The PP compound is available in the following vibrant colors from GRAFE’s Colorstat® series: blue, yellow, white, red and brown. The PP material was especially developed for lightweight designs. Using 2K injection molding, additional design elements can be added. These may include, for example, plastic elements that light up in the dark without requiring additional light sources. Let’s remember: safety helmets can save lives.
