Compounds with thermal conductivity

Polymer materials can be equipped with very special functions by adding fillers and additives. For example, it is possible to modify the electrical or thermal conductivity of plastics in this manner. Thermally conductive polymer materials, in particular, have been growing in popularity through new applications, for example in the automotive industry.

 

GRAFE Polymer Technik GmbH recognized this trend early on and has been focusing on its development. The company now has many years of experience in the formulation of compounds used in applications requiring thermal conductivity. The main challenge in the development of thermally conductive plastic compounds is to tailor the formulation specifically to the end application. The optimal heat transport or thermal conductivity which is ideally suited to a specific application can only be achieved when the material is tailored to the entire process chain of part development and production. Not only does GRAFE Polymer Technik GmbH provide standardized compound solutions, it adds value to its customers by offering them application-specific compound solutions which are customized to meet the requirements of the individual component and process chain.

 

A wide variety of different materials enter into the development of such composites. For example, thermally conductive compounds can be equipped with electrically conductive properties and electrically insulating properties as well. Another important aspect in the development of thermally conductive polymers are the anisotropic properties which result from the varying geometries of the thermally conductive fillers. Thermally conductive compounds that are ideally suited to both the process chain and the final application can be developed through the proper selection of raw materials, an optimized filler content and a compounding technology adapted to the filler.

The type of thermal conductivity required by the application is determined by and targeted to the specific polymer used in the process chain particular to the production of the part or the semi-finished product. It is best when our customers involve us early on in the part design and development regarding the choice of material. This allows us to determine the most effective degree of additional functionality in the development of the compound.
